Working Space

Working height

A desk which is too low or too high increases postural strain. This is much more important than is generally understood. Most people work at desks of standard height but there is no standard person.

Whether we sit or stand to work, it is essential to make the eyes, hands and arms comfortable without distorting the trunk. If the work is too low we will collapse the trunk downwards; if it is too high, we will lift the arms and shoulders. In both cases the result is strain and, eventually, damage.

We are faced with a simple choice: we can either distort the body to accommodate a fixed working height, or use an adjustable work table which allows us to reduce strain by choosing an appropriate working height.
